E-Z
Kold Kottager units are built using stainless steel parts and finished
with easy-to-maintain surfaces. All Kottager units feature thermostatic
controls, top-loading compartments with individual lids, stainless
steel hinges & screws, plastic lined interiors and sliding shelves.
The built-in compressor uses ozone-free 134A refrigerant. The cold-plate
is filled with a non-corrosive, non-toxic, eutectic solution.
Nine E-Z Kottager models are currently available; six models are
refrigerator & freezer combination units, three are freezer-only
models. When used with supplementary power provided by solar cells,
the high efficiency of the units allows for fewer solar cells to
be used, than with comparable units currently available on the market.
Top-loading
E-Z Kottager conserves energy since cold air, which is heavier than
warm air, spills out when a front-loading unit is opened, increasing
power consumption to replace the lost cold.

The
units are built from satin coat steel for durability. We install
plastic liners, stainless steel hinges & door supports: every
part used in constructing the units (even the screws) are rust-resistant.
The lids have standard refrigerator gaskets using magnetic strips
to ensure a firm seal.
All sides, the bottom and the lids are insulated with 4-5
of high quality insulation rated at R30-R35.
Cold-plates are used instead of the typical frosted evaporators
found in regular refrigerators, because of their superior efficiency.
The
fridge & freezer units are designed with a 1 thick wrap-around
box cold plate that freezes on all four sides of the freezer. The
freezer only units, use two cold plates, one at each end of the
freezer compartment,
The following results are from testing done using the E-Z Kold Kottager
refrigerator/freezer models running on 12V DC, emulating typical
household usage. The air temperature throughout the testing period
was at 80°F. To simulate normal household usage, we opened the
fridge compartment door eight times a day for 30 seconds each time,
and opened the freezer compartment door twice a day also for 30
seconds at a time. Warm food and beverages were added to the units
once a week and cold items were removed throughout the test period.
For
the Kottager K12-DC, total power consumption over a 24 hour period
averaged a mere 50 amp hours (600 watts). The Kottager K9-DC performed
equally well, consuming an average of 40 amp hours (480 watts) over
24 hours. The power consumption for the Kottager K6-DC averaged
30 amp hours (360 watts) per 24 hours of usage. Typically at lower
ambient temperatures, power consumption will be less.
A 100 watt solar panel, operating at 17.0 volts DC will produce
505 watts per day at peak power in Winnipeg.
On
the poorest days of the year it will produce 253 watts per day.
From these figures it is evident that a small to medium sized solar
system configured with sufficient battery storage will be very capable
of operating an E-Z Kold Kottager with minimal investment.
