had sent to the editors of several boating magazines...

To the Editor:
In this age of voice mail and e-mail, any cruiser who has ever tried
to call a service department from a sometimes functioning payphone
on any island in the Caribbean will appreciate an equipment manufacturer
who answers the phone in person. No interminable costly holds, no
pre-recorded messages, just a real voice asking How may I
help you?
Our refrigeration failed shortly before we left the Dominion Republic
in December. Weve had our E-Z Kold air/water cooled holding
plate system on board Serendipity, our Columbia 43, and have run
it mercilessly in the tropics for ten years with almost no problems.
In August 2000, however we replaced the compressor and switched
from R12 to R134A refrigerant. We assumed the failure had something
to do with the new compressor.
Since we planned to provision in Puerto Rico before heading south,
we needed a working refrigerator/freezer. So we called Marvin Nye
at E-Z Kold in Canada . . . and he answered the phone! He also walked
us through several diagnostic procedures, but suggested we have
someone local look at the system. We did, three times. Three different
refrigeration specialists gave us three different diagnoses, but
none was able to fix the problem.
After three more phone calls to Marvin (who made himself available
at pre-arranged times when we knew wed be near a payphone),
E-Z Kold express mailed us not only the new compressor, which was
still under warranty, but an entirely new drop-in holding
plate system, fully charged and ready to install.
Thanks to E-Z Kolds very human service and sensitivity to
the challenges of communicating while cruising the island, we are
looking forward to enjoying COLD beer in Venezuela this hurricane
season.
